The problem with "science" understanding the third eye and consciousness is that brain activity isn't necessary for us to be present. That's the entire point. As they say, a hand can not grasp itself. The pineal gland might be the seat of the soul, but nobody can really define what the soul is. One could be in a coma and they could have virtually no measurable brain activity, but that doesn't necessarily mean that their soul is disconnected from their body. In fact, CONsciousness literally means the opposite (con) of science. Our knowledge and logic does not define who we are--that can change. As they say--the sea has no memory. We're just a bubble.

Not only would it be a lot of fun, but how cool would it be to say...I got a bachelor's degree in rock 'n' roll?!? It's even more respectable than an English degree, in my opinion.
